There are many online websites for downloading movies, though the legality issue was still a major question mark until recently, especially since sites downloading music like Napster were shut down. Classic movies are generally be priced at $13.99, with some movies priced as low as $9.99. New movies are all over the map. King Kong, for instance, will sell for $19.99, compared to $14.96 + shipping from retailers like Amazon. The Bad News Bears (2005), on the other hand, sells for $26.00 online at Movielink, which is essentially the same price Amazon is carrying at the moment. Most of these offerings, however, will not offer the extras found on today's DVD and you instantly sacrifice the ability to take your movies with you on the go.

Encrypted or not, the standard DVD is at least portable. All in all, this makes movie downloads from these sites, even with the reassurance of everything being acceptable and “legal” as really weak.. Until a better pricing appears, it would seem that these companies are doomed to failure. At least they would be, if the movie companies did not own them. Wait for a better deal.

Now that I have my Mac Mini set up to deliver my whole iTunes library to my listening room through Airtunes with Sony PSP remote control, I needed to rewire my hi-fi components. The goal: deliver the digital Airtunes signal through the best DAC in the path and passing the analog signal cleanly through to my loudspeakers. I have no budget, so I must only use components I already own.

I also wanted to test how much I could combat the compressed audio feed’s nasties in the analog realm. My weapons: Taddeo Digital Antidote II and Rogue Audio Magnum 99 Preamp. One of these components won the battle and the other almost lost the whole war.

Airport Express DAC: Stereophile has taught us that the Airport Express’s internal DAC is to be avoided in a hi-fi set up. To successfully use an Airport Express in your signal path you must use its digital optical output feeding an external DAC. The Airport Express outputs a digital signal through the same mini jack port as analog. I just needed this mini-jack to optical adapter from Parts Express.

Digital Optical cable: My optical cable collection is the most neglected cable category in my home theater set up. I’ve read many articles and books (like Audio/Video Cable Installer’s Pocket Guide) lauding the optical cable. Digital coax is universally considered a superior connection—jitter reduction (or least amount of addition), and more stable connectors. So the best optical cable I have is not from a !33t boutique manufacturer but from Best Buy’s favorite: Monster Cable. I’m sure its price surpassed its quality.

With the mini jack adapter clicked in place I insert it into the Airport Express and then snake it across to my Onkyo’s Digital Optical Input 3 (formerly home to Dish HD STB audio output, soon to be sent back to Dish/AT&T for personal budget cuts).

Onkyo DAC and analog passthrough/output: It took me a couple tries to figure out the analog output from my Onkyo AV receiver the Airport Express feeds. My initial attempts pass the digital signal out through an analog out failed. I had to reference the manual to find out that you could not pass a digital only signal to either the analog record out or to Zone 2. I split the Onkyo’s preamp out to deliver the Onkyo DAC signal to my Rogue preamp. One pair of interconnects plugged into the Tape Input while the other remained in the AUX input (with the Rogue’s home theater bypass the AUX input is wired to bypass (duh) the Rogue’s tube gain and output stages). (I hope the Monster Turbine Y Adapters I use to split the preamp out are as transparent as advertised, a small bit of metal and teflon shouldn’t make too much difference, right?)

Problems with Taddeo Digital Antidote 2: I love my TDA 2 for CD playback. I thought for sure they could make compressed digital audio just as sweet as CD. I was wrong. Airtunes through the TDA 2 sounded compressed, congested, boomy, splashy, muted and just super awful. Since this was the way I first wired the rig I was quick to blame the Airport Express and compressed audio delivery. I almost gave up. Always suspicious that I’m doing something idiotic that I think is genius I took the TDA 2 out of the path. Someone just removed the thick veil covering the music.

Gain and Volume Control: When you attenuate digital signals you lose bits along with decibels. I wanted the cleanest signal out of the Onkyo while using the Rogue’s normal volume range. To achieve this I raised the Onkyo’s volume to its reference, 0 db. I kept the Rogue’s gain at the middle setting. This combo gave me manageable volume control on the Rogue with a minimal loss of bit resolution.

With all my wiring (and non-wiring) in place I was finally ready to sit in my listening chair and enjoy any song in my iTunes catalog.

I must admit I did have some trouble downloading music from my computer to my Ipod when I first got it, so once I had it all figured out I thought a quick guide on how to download music from the computer to an Ipod would probably be quite appreciated. I hope this guide makes your Ipod experience that much easier.

So the first step is obviously having music on your computer to download to your Ipod. Music can be obtained via various methods, either by downloading them from a subscriber site or converting your cd collection to mp3 via a conversion program. I have included a link to some great subscriber sites at the end of this article, some of which come with bonus converting software on signup which will allow you to convert your whole cd collection to digital mp3 form.

The next step is of course to find the song or video you want to watch on the subscriber site. Once you have found the desired file, make sure you choose the Video Ipod/ Sony PSP download option. This is simply to ensure that you get the correct file type to be watched on your Ipod. Then you'll need to download the file to a place on your computer, it is best to create a folder called Ipodfiles or something similar so you will know exactly where they are. If of course you are using conversion software to convert your cd collection then the software will lead you through the process.

Once you have your music or movie on your computer, it is then time to connect your Ipod to your computer via its USB cord. On most newer computers there is a USB port at the front of the computer, otherwise it will be at the back just below where you plug in your keyboard and mouse.

Open the Apple iTunes application. Select 'Add File to Library' from the 'File' menu in the iTunes application. Browse your computer for the song you previously downloaded and click 'Open.' Then Click 'Edit,' then click 'Preferences in the iTunes application. Once that is done click the 'iPod' tab, then click 'Songs,' and then 'Automatically update all Songs.' Lastly, you should click 'OK.'

This is where Apples Itunes software really comes into its own, as it will do all the work for you from this point on. It will automatically download all the music onto your Ipod for you, then all you need to do is select the file in your Ipod and you'll be good to go.

If all instructions above have been followed correctly you should have been able to successfully download a movie on your Ipod, and been able to watch it. As you can see, it is not a complicated process and you should be able to achieve this quite easily.

As mentioned above, one of the most important parts of this process is picking the right subscriber site. The wrong one will not have the selection you desire, and could end up costing you more than you are willing to pay if it charges download fees. 1.) Get A Memory Stick

You are going to need a lot of free space. The original 32 MB stick just won’t cut it. How can you download games or watch movies on 32 MBs?! I would recommend 256 Megs of free space.

2.) Download PSP game files to your computer

Make sure you aren’t downloading shareware but full games. Once you download the games you want to your computer, you are able to transfer them to your PSP.

3.) Decompress the file

If the games are compressed in a ZIP file, you will need a free program like Winzip or Stuffit Expander (Mac) to decompress the file. These programs will automatically unzip the file.

4.) Connect your PSP to your computer

Now, how do we play the games? To be able to play the games, you must connect the PSP to your computer (duh). You should use the free USB cable that the PSP comes with. The PSP must be in USB mode for the files to download. How to do this? Press the HOME button and scroll to the SETTINGS column. Scroll to USB CONNECTION and press X. Then you are ready for file transfer.

5.) Copy the PSP Game to your PSP

First things first you are going to need a hard drive, your current one is probably a 40gb 2.5" sata 5400rpm so you need to look on places like amazon, misco etc... for any hard drive that is 2.5" sata 5400rpm and has the size in GB that you want. Sony recommend that you don't go faster than 5400rpm, so don't, in case it has adverse effects your shiny new ps3, and there are plenty of 5400rpm to choose from at the right price.

Secondly you are going to need an external drive or USB memory stick to backup your game saves, downloads etc... To see how much space you will need on an external device go to Settings>System Settings>System Information, this will then display how much free space you have on your system so you have to use some maths to work out how much space you have used, e.g. "free space 30GB/40GB" means you have 30gb free space out of 40gb so you have used 40gb - 30gb = 10gb

there are two ways of backing your information up, the cheaper way is to use a USB pen drive, to back up your game saves, an 8gb should be enough and can be bought for around £10 if you don't have one already. To do, this insert your USB drive into a USB slot on your ps3, then go to Game>Saved Data Utility> then highlight the game save data you want to back up e.g. COD4> press triangle to bring up the menu> select "copy"> you will then be asked to "select destination" and your USB pen drive should be listed, Highlight the USB drive and press "X", the game save data will now be saved on your USB. Repeat this method for all your game saves. If you have enough space left after this is done on your USB then you can also back up any media you have on the ps3. If you have only used around 7gb on your ps3 (highly unlikely!) you can do a full system back up which is explained below

The other method is to do a system back-up on an external drive, which must be in the FAT-32 format, attach your external drive to your ps3 and go to Settings>System Settings>Back up utility>Back up this will then back up all your information to your external drive.

The first method is probably the best if you don't already have an external drive for cost issues, as

your user account and PSN account info and updates are stored on the ps3's internal flash memory. It is only your media, game saves and downloaded content/media that is stored on the HDD, so if you do a backup of all your media and game saves you will be ready to go, once the ps3 ormats your new HDD. But if you are using a wireless router make sure you know your WEP key as you will have to put that back in when your new HDD is in.

Also downloaded games like Tekken 5 can't be backed up, so you will have to download them again, this is not a problem as you get 5 downloads of each title you buy, simply go to the playstation store and go to download history where all the games/media you have ever downloaded will be listed, then simply press download on the highlighted game.

For the next bit you will need;

A small flat head screwdriver

A small Philips screwdriver

Somewhere flat and free of dust/dirt to work

O.k. So we have our nice new HDD, and we have backed up all the data we want to, it is now time to remove the original HDD. First turn off the ps3 and remove all power cables for safety, now locate the drive cover on the left hand side of the system, it should have a HDD sticker on it or a label saying "detach this cover when removing the hard drive" get your small flat head screw driver and prise off this cover, this will then reveal the HDD.

You should now see your HDD and a metallic BLUE screw, get your Phillips screw driver and remove the blue screw, this is the screw that holds the HDD in place on your ps3, once this is removed flip up the metal handle that is to the left of where the screw was and slide the HDD towards the FRONT of the ps3 to dislodge it from the internal connections, you can now pull the HDD carefully towards you and it will slide straight out.

You now have access to your HDD out side the ps3, you will now have to remove the tray that is attached to your original HDD, there are four Phillips screws, two on either side, that need to be removed, once this has been done remove your old ps3 HDD out of the tray and put in your new 2.5MM SATA Notebook HDD then replace the 4 screws to hold it in place.

Now your new HDD is in the ps3 caddy, you now have to install it into your ps3, which is the reversal of removal. First push carefully the new caddy into the HDD space, but remember to keep it to the right hand side of the slot (or the front of the ps3), when it touches the back of the HDD space use the handle to push it to the left (or back of the ps3) to locate the HDD connections on the PS3 connections, you will know when this has been done correctly when the space where the blue screw goes lines up with the hole on the ps3. Once it is lined up you can now put the Blue screw back in to secure the HDD to the ps3, replace the HDD cover and turn your system on.

Now as soon as the console boots up you will presented with a screen asking you to format your new HDD, as your ps3 has realised there is a new HDD installed, you must select "yes" twice as a ps3 safety precaution in case you erase your hard drive by accident!

This will take around 2 minutes and you will then be asked to reboot your system. Once you have rebooted you can now check if your mod has been successful (fingers crossed!) Go to System>System Settings>System Information, this will display your free space that should reflect the size of the replacement HDD you have just installed, but don't start worrying if it is 15 - 20GB short of what you expected as this is taken up by the ps3 for system use.

You now have a new bigger hard drive, all you need to do now is put your game saves/media back on, simply connect your USB/hard drive go to games>saved data utility>USB device(or what ever you used to back up your data) you can now highlight the game you want to copy onto your new HDD, press triangle and select "copy" repeat this for all your game saves and media and away you go, you now have a bigger HDD and your [http://www.ps3offer.co.uk]new ps3 is back to normal. It's pretty easy really, it just takes time to save all your games and put them back on, but well worth it for all that extra space!

Unfortunately, consoles do not last forever and as we get older it seems that we simply lose the ability to play the games that entertained us as children (this statement ignores the Wii's Virtual Console, of course). However, emulators provide a solution to the problem... Project 64 roms give us the ability to replay full Nintendo 64 games. Read on to learn more.

What are Emulators?

Emulators are light-weight programs that act as functional substitutions for gaming consoles. They not only allow you to play existing video games, but also hack games to create new levels, challenges, etc. Emulators are mostly used for older consoles, such as the NES or the SEGA Genesis, but can used for newer consoles (though they are generally in serious need of improvement).

How do Emulators Work?

Basically all you need to know (unless you want to make your own emulator) is that the emulator program is able to open files known as ROMs or ISOs. ROMs are images of games that originally used cartridges (SNES, N64, etc.), and ISOs are images of games that were originally on discs (PS, Dreamcast, etc.). However, one emulator cannot play all ROMs or ISOs. To play a SNES ROM, you need an emulator that acts as a SNES. To play a PS ISO, you need a PS Emulator. To play 64 roms, you need an emulator like Project 64. Make sense? Good.

What are the Benefits to Using an Emulator?

Emulators allow you to enjoy a seemingly infinite number of games free-of-charge on your own computer, they take up a very insignificant amount of space on your hard drive (unless you're using an emulator for a new console), and they allow you to save your game whenever and wherever you see fit. I (Xalo) own the original Chrono Trigger for the SNES. However, I imagine many of you guys grew up with an N64 or even a later console, completely missing out on a legendary game. Once a console has lived out its lifespan and the only alternative is to buy it again to play on another console (which will again be replaced in about 3-5 years), what are you supposed to do? Emulators offer the only solution for gamers who just want to relive the classics they grew up with.

So They're Perfect, Right?

Well, nothing is perfect. The ESA has made it illegal (and often times impossible) to download some ROMs, making it difficult to find the game you're looking for. They make it illegal on the grounds that the Wii's Virtual Console is designed to let you relive your childhood by selling you yesterday's technology at today's prices. Also, many download sites look a little sketchy and should not be trusted immediately. Oftentimes the companies that made these original games are no longer in existence and are definitely not making any more money from sales of the game itself. So, buy the game on virtual console if you wish, but we prefer the comfort of our computers. There's nothing quite like the ability to save your state at any point in the game with a Project 64 rom. Also, if you don't want to get frustrated or have your hands burst in flames, we recommend you purchase a USB controller. They are around $10-$15 new but are definitely worth it if you plan on playing any fighting games (see Street Fighter).

A big gamer may be in love with many genres of gaming but will often select one or two when they have to give gift ideas. They know the broader the selection the more confusing it can be.

Tip #5: Games Are Not Compatible Across Brands

Do not assume that a Nintendo game will work with an Xbox video game console. This is never the case because each brand is competing for your sale. There are some cases where the same brand will work from generation to generation but there are exceptions.

If you are choosing a new video game console this year please consider the quality of your current television set. You do not have to hit the stores in search for a new High Definition TV if this is not in your budget because all console systems will work on a standard definition TV (STDTV).

If you want the best possible picture for this new system, please research your current televisions input possibilities. The Microsoft Xbox 360 comes with component cables that will work with a standard TV and most HDTVs. You may also purchase S-Video AV cables for older style TV’s or VGA HD AV Cables for computer monitors or some HDTVs.

The prices of the game console systems and games vary by brand but will be consistent in most stores and shopping areas. If you find a game that is cheaper in one store than another you should ask if it’s on sale or pre-owned.

Some retailers will push “pre-owned” (used) games on you because they bring in a larger profit for the company. These games, typically, are as good as new and most professional game retailers will validate the game works or contains a scratch free surface for CD/DVD game media. Please be aware that some retailers will try to sneak you a pre-owned copy of a game over the new copy if you simply request the title by name.

Most retail outlets refuse to sell used PC video games because many games require license keys to play. Buying back a PC video game can lead to licensing issues and complications in the future and it’s usually not a typical practice.

Tip #9: Extended Service Agreements

There are two service agreements you may run into while purchasing a console system: retail extended service agreement and manufacturer extended warranty. A retail outlet may offer an agreement they have supplied and when a product must be returned you bring it back to the store or chain you purchased the agreement with. A manufacturer extended warranty is issued by the company which created the product (i.e. Microsoft). If the product breaks, you ship it back to the manufacturer.

Most people believe service agreements are “free money” to the retail outlet and manufacturer. In many cases this will be true, with a special exception: early adopters. If you want to cover your product for an additional two years or more you may opt to purchase the agreement. If you are buying a product that is new to the market, such as the Sony PlayStation 3 or Nintendo Wii, it may be in your best interest to buy an extended agreement.

Unfortunately, it is common for manufacturers to produce products that have flaws in their initial designs. Many of these flaws do not rear their ugly head until after the 90-day express warranty or manufacturer’s limited 1-year warranty. While newer products have fixed many of the flaws that are found by the early adopters, you might be the early adopter that was hit by the problem and it can become costly.

Tip #10: Understand Return Policies

Returning policies for video game products vary from retailer to retailer. One important thing to keep in mind: opening a video game seal limits your return choices. Most retail outlets will allow you to return a product if it is defective and it may be returned for the same product.

Most return policies do not tolerate the “I don’t like it” reason for returning a product. Some retail outlets which are not 100% focused on gaming may allow you to return products after the seal has been opened but this isn’t typical for a game store. Do not open a product if you are unsure you want to keep it.

Always keep your receipts handy, especially for gifts. Many online stores allow you to return games without a physical receipt because the records of the order are on hand. A walk-in store will require you to have a receipt or gift receipt for exchanges for different products. You may be able to return a product for the same product if you do not have a receipt but it is always advised to keep those receipts for roughly 30 days.

After 15 to 30 days, most company’s in-store return policy will expire. You will be forced to talk with the publisher of the game or manufacturer of the console system to get further assistance.

Remember your implied limited warranty on products if you are living within the United States. Almost every state has a “limited” warranty on products that covers 1-year. This does not, however, cover acts of god or user error resulting in a broken product.

I got my PSP two years ago and still love it like the day when I first bought it. I would not trade it for any other handheld game system. I can say for sure, I give it a daily usage, to get myself entertained when there is nothing better to do. Assuming you have the MP4s saved to the computer, all that’s needed is to save the MP4s that you want to watch into the folder you just created named “100mnv01”. Once you’ve done that, to play the movies all you need to do is click on them inside that folder with the PSP itself, and they should begin to play from there.
